Talking ‘Bout the Revolution
June 15th, 2006When Nintendo announced that the console we had come to know as Revolution was to adopt a more dimunitive moniker, many people were surprised. More people were amused.
I refrained from joining in the clamour of puns and jokes that took the piss out of Nintendo's 'Wii'naming of the hugely anticipated games machine, waiting until I could find something really funny to say. Eventually I gave up and just decided to post this:
Noticed while reading a back issue of EDGE on the toilet (where best to contemplate the Wii?), this interview with Miyamoto predates the new name, but I've brought it up to date…
"For example, when it comes to Wii, we don't call it a next-generation console. We call it a new-generation console. We want each household to always have a Wii console connected to their TV.
If someone comes into your house and there isn't a Wii sitting comfortably next to the TV, we want them to argue, and say: 'Oh! Why don't you have Wii?' That's what we want to create.
We want a brand new relationship between people and their TVs through the Wii. And when we achieve that then people will understand what Nintendo is now and what Nintendo always has been." – Shigeru Miyamoto in EDGE Issue 162
By November you'll all want to come over and play with my Wii, it's gonna be HUGE.
